Description
Standard theory holds that white dwarfs with cores composed of carbon, oxygen or heavier elements will crystallize as they cool below certain temperatures. In this talk I will present simple arguments that suggest that for helium-core white dwarfs, quantum effects become significant before the crystallization temperature is reached. In this case, instead of crystallizing, the helium nuclei will condense into a zero-momentum macroscopic state of large occupation number. I will present an effective field theory description of this charged condensate and discuss implications for the magnetic fields and the cooling rate of the white dwarf.
