Gauge Threshold Corrections for Local String Models

In models where the Standard Model degrees of freedom are supported on a brane/localised in the extra dimensions, I describe how threshold corrections imply gauge coupling running starts at a scale parametrically above the string scale. This conclusion follows from both general requirements of field theory and direct string computations. I briefly describe implications for gauge coupling unification.
