CMOS based microelectronics is approaching the ultimate limits given by the structure of matter. Beyond those limits further progress in the capability to process information can be based on new physical devices or alternative architectures. In the seminar we discuss the implemention of massively parallel neural microcircuits in deep-submicron VLSI technologies. The prototype system currently being constructed in the framework of the EU FACETS project will be presented. First measurements will be shown and the self-organizing features (plasticity) implemented on the VLSI chips will be discussed.
