Amplitude equations for magnetic buoyancy instabilities and symmetry breaking

Description
First I shall give a long introduction to the method of multiple scales by deriving the nonlinear amplitude equation for the Van der Pol oscillator. Next I shall show how such multiscale methods can be applied to study Rayleigh-Bernard convection beyond linear stability by writing down the amplitude equations. Finally I shall show upon how such amplitude equations must be generalised for instabilties that break parity. Such amplitude equations are useful to study the symmetry breaking we have numerically observed in magnetic buoyancy instabilities.
