Magnetic reconnection and field line topology in magnetic relaxation

Description
Magnetic field relaxation and reconnection is investigated under the constraint of the field's topology. As topological quantifier we apply the fixed point index which should be ideally conserved. This additional constraint leads to a state other than the previously proposed Taylor state. By monitoring a topological flux function at those fixed points we can qualify magnetic reconnection. The framework leading to these results is presented.
