I will review some applications of the geometric notion of 'blow-up' in physics, particularly with regards to instantons, both gauge-theoretic and gravitational ones.
The blow-up involves gluing in a complex sphere, CP^1, with a negative normal bundle in a given point of a complex surface.
It will be shown that in certain cases the vicinity of such a sphere may be described rather explicitly in a differential-geometric way.
