Recent news

The program is now available. Please use the menubar on the left to navigate. Your hotel / accommodation requests have been accommodated. In the case you requested to share a room we have also been able to satisfy most such requests. More information is provided on the ferry on the way to Mariehamn. The conference begins on Viking Line ferry sailing from Stockholm harbour May 28, 2013, at 16.30 Swedish time. These large ferries leave sharply on time -- and wait for nobody. It is recommended that you be in the ferry terminal at 15.45, at the latest. Persons from the organizing committee will be in the ferry terminal with the tickets from 15.15, at the latest. http://www.sales.vikingline.com/en/international/book-pay-change/good-to-know/port-info/stockholm/

Scope

Recent years have been characterized by an increasing interest in and awareness of the role of multi-scale interactions in shaping the ecology of wide aquatic environments as the ocean and small-scale active suspensions as biofilms. These interactions range from micro-scale physical-biological coupling characterising the life of individual organisms to the large-scale population dynamics whose impact can be felt at the level of the global climate. Penetrating such new and intriguing research field demands a multidisciplinary approach accounting for the coupling of physics, chemistry, and biology from the microscale to the macroscale, thus the necessity of this workshop which aims at setting up a new common ground for scientists with different backgrounds.

The novelty of the proposed workshop is to bring together scientists working in a range of fields, from fluid dynamicists to mathematicians, from marine biologists to computational scientists, with the objective of setting the state of the art in numerical and experimental approaches to “active fluids”.

The venue is Hotel Arkipelag in downtown Mariehamn, the capital of the province of Åland, Finland. Note however that the program starts on a ferry from Stockholm to Mariehamn and your presence there is important information for the organizers. In addition to the invited talks, we plan to have ample time for discussions and some contributed talks and/or posters. Please indicated your interest in contributing via the registration form (with a title). There is no workshop fee. Travel on the ferry from Stockholm to Mariehamn, including dinner on the ferry, is free for all participants, as are coffee and lunches at the Workshop. We also plan for a workshop dinner on Thursday. The participants should aim for arriving to Stockholm so as to reach the ferry terminal by 16.00 on Wednesday, and plan for an arrival to back to Stockholm around 18.30 on Saturday (alternative possibilities exist eg. for travel via Finland).

Application

If you want to apply for participation in the workshop, please fill in the application form. You will be informed by the organizers shortly after the application deadline whether your application has been approved. Due to space restrictions, the total number of participants is strictly limited (40 slots are forseen, invited speakers are of course automatically approved, but need to register anyway.)

Application deadline: 28 March 2014

There is no registration fee.

Travel Reimbursement

PhD students and young Postdoc fellows are eligible for travel grants to participate in the program. If you are interested in such a grant, please mark the corresponding field in the application form, briefly summarize your interest in the program in the comments field, and indicate an estimation of your expected travel expenses. Since only a limited number of grants is available, decision concerning the grants will be made on a case-by-case basis and you will be notified shortly after the application deadline. In addition, the COST Action MP1305 "Flowing matter" may support some of the participants; please check if you are egligible for COST support.

Accommodation

From the registration page you may book a room at one of the two hotels we have reserved for the participants. The accommodation is paid on spot.
