I am interested in “understanding” the central nervous system from in an information processing context. I thus need to understand how information is transported, processed and stored in the brain. As this is closely related to how the central nervous system is developed, brain evolution is a key part of the understanding. I start with a short introduction to the central nervous system. I then discuss the topic of understanding based on four hypotheses, Selective stabilization hypothesis (Changeux and Danchin 1973), Neuronal recycling hypothesis (Dehaene 2004), Massive redeployment hypothesis (Anderson 2007), and Special skills hypothesis (Changeux 1989 and Bergeron 2007).
