Description

Accelerator driven Transmutation (ATW) concepts, or as it is also frequently called Accelerator-driven Systems (ADS) have been proposed to remediate growing concerns for the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle, leaving significant amount of highly radiotoxic materials for geological repositories and consequently relying on the natural barriers beyond human control. The biggest advantage of the ADS is its subcritical operation. Subcriticality opens new possibilities to construct dedicated transmutation systems with specially designed fuels which could never be used in critical reactors because of criticality safety concerns. Since over 12 years Reactor Physics group at KTH is particpating in those growing research activities including experiments conducted in collaboration with USA, Russia and many Euroepan countries. New experimental challengies, need for new ideas and instrumentation will be shortly presented.
