Description
Thermodynamic quantities associated with black holes in
Anti-de Sitter space obey an interesting identity when the
cosmological constant is included as one of the dynamical
variables: the generalized Smarr formula. This relation can
be shown to follow from relatively simple considerations in
the dual holographic field theory. The large N behavior of
extensive thermodynamics quantities in the gauge theory
yield a universal relation from which, with additional
input, the generalized Smarr formula naturally follows.
