Meeting synopsis:

Magnetic helicity is a conserved quantity in ideal MHD and is also a topological invariant. Due to these properties, it plays special roles for the operation of the global solar dynamo, and in the release of solar eruptive events, but both of these related processes remain poorly understood. On both themes, theoretical models would benefit from being validated and constrained with observational data, and the increasing amounts of observational data could be more efficiently used as basis to improve the models. The abundant observational data pouring in from various sources poses its own challenges and sometimes cross-calibrations are lacking. This program will bring together solar observers and dynamo theorists to work on these topics. We aim to obtain crucial new knowledge on the operation of the global solar dynamo itself, but also how it drives eruptive events which then are observed as space weather.

Dates: 4-29 March 2019 (4-8 March conference/workshop; 11-29 March long-term activities)

The work schedule will begin with a 5-day workshop with the remaining three weeks of the program consisting of topical discussion sessions, seminars, and team work on issues raised during the event. Short-term participants will attend the workshop only, while a smaller number of long-term participants will have opportunity to stay for the entire duration of the program. Topics for discussions and seminars include:

  • insights on and estimates of helicity in the Sun and solar wind, helical structures on Earth;
  • role of helicities in solar and stellar flares and in coronal mass ejections with anemphasis on space weather phenomena and their coupling with the Earth environment;
  • role of helicities in dynamo theories and numerical modelling;
  • using observations to constrain, validate and improve the models;
  • using the models to define new observables/new ways of observing; issues in the cross-calibration of observational datasets and their resolutions;
  • sources of helicities in astro/geophysical context;
  • future directions in helicity studies;
  • future observational missions and planning of their science cases.

Accommodation

Financial support decisions have been announced, and final list of registrants compiled. Please inform the organisers about your final arrival and departure dates so that we can, among other things, reserve accommodation for you. The agenda of the program will be released shortly, and contributions from the participants called for.

Please be aware that unfortunately, scammers sometimes approach participants claiming to be able to provide accommodation and asking for credit card details. Please do not give this information to them. For successful applicants, Nordita will be in touch via email regarding accommodation. If you are in any doubt about the legitimacy of an approach, please get in contact with the organisers.
