Description
Discussion based on https://arxiv.org/abs/1803.02350 TITLE: What to do with LIGO data ABSTRACT: One of the biggest discoveries of the past few years in astrophysics and cosmology undoubtedly is that of gravitational waves produced in the merging of binary black holes. The number of implications of this discovery is immense. In this light, and especially given the high required precision, the detection methods in use deserve special attention. I will review some of LIGO's central detection statistics and methods, and confront them with the data. I will also accentuate simple, yet fundamental intricacies inherent to these problems, such as parameter degeneracies and sample variance. When possible, I will draw comparison to CMB data analysis (my actual field of study).
