Description
In this talk, I will discuss recent developments in understanding the higher-form global symmetry. In particular, I will discuss the existence of 1-form global symmetry in theory of elasticity in 2+1 dimensions. With this in mind, I will discuss how one can construct low energy effective theories of fluid coupled to elastic medium (hydrodynamics with spontaneous broken translational symmetry) in such a way that the 1-form global symmetry is manifested. Moreover, by implementing this symmetry to holographic construction, we are able to find new ways to construct simple holographic duals of magnetohydrodynamics and theory with spontaneously broken translational symmetry. Various new features of these holographic theories and its low-energy excitations will also be discussed. This talk is based on two recent papers with Saso Grozdanov: 1707.04182 and 1801.03199.
