Description
I will show how to formulate magnetohydrodynamics and viscoelastic hydrodynamics using modern hydrodynamic methods and recast it in terms of generalised global symmetries. It is shown that all these states of matter have generalise global symmetries partially broken, making it a theory of higher-form superfluidity. Besides making these systems easier to study, such as associated instabilities and hydrostatic states, symmetry-based approaches allow for an immediate formulation of holographic duals. Several new results will be highlighted such as the complete description of linear isotropic viscoelastic materials, a reformulation of classical elasticity theory in terms of surface calculaus and the characterisation of transport in magnetohydrodynamics.
