AlbaNova Colloquium

Material science with GeV heavy ions

by Christina Trautmann ((GSI, Darmstadt))

Europe/Stockholm
Description

The existing accelerators at GSI and the future facility FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) provide unique opportunities for material science and other interdisciplinary research disciplines. The interest in beams of such high energies is based on the large energy deposition along the trajectory of each individual ion creating long nanoscopic trails of severe damage. The small track size in combination with the large ion range (up to 100 µm and more) allows us to overcome limits of planar structuring techniques. The presentation will provide a short glimpse of activities in the field of ion track nanotechnology and discuss examples for applications of nanochannels and nanowires of tailored diameter, length, and shape.
