In this talk we will view the well-known Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) model, which describes a two-level quantum system coupled to a relativistic quantum field, from the lens of operator algebra. Firstly, we will make connections with the vast literature on the van Hove model and spin-boson model. Next, we will show that in the case of massless scalar fields in (3+1)-dimensional spacetimes, both the ultraviolet and (in particular) the infrared regularity of the UDW model require some care for the interaction to make sense. Time permitting, we will discuss some connection with the Unruh effect that is traditionally studied using the interaction picture representation.
