Revealing the Cosmic Web with CMB Data

More than 90% of all the baryons in the Universe are not inside galaxies, but in the gas spread through galaxy clusters and the cosmic web, with roughly 25% residing in the filaments between galaxy clusters. Because it is so diffuse it is challenging to observe, and yet locating and characterising this gas is important for our understanding of large scale structure. In this talk, I will describe how we are using the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect in maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to trace filamentary gas. I will focus in particular on data and results from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, and then indicate future directions with the Simons Observatory and other instruments.
