Description
Southern Africa has invested heavily in Astronomy, particularly the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope project but facilities also include a 10m-class optical telescope (SALT) and a gamma-ray telescope in Namibia (HESS). I will discuss some of the science - current and planned - that use these facilities, focusing on cosmological probes. I will also include thoughts about the impact of Astronomy beyond academia.
