Description
Accurate measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with Planck’s High Frequency Instrument (HFI) required unprecedented control of systematic effects arising from the instrument and its environment. Several effects—including analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) nonlinearities, detector time constants, and signals induced by cosmic rays—were not anticipated before launch. Addressing them required intensive modelling based on flight data and the development of innovative data-processing techniques. These lessons are relevant to future satellite missions such as LiteBIRD, which aims to detect the faint B-mode polarisation signal. I will present the main challenges encountered in the Planck data analysis and the methods developed to address them.
