Future spectral distortion missions, such as the proposed ESA mission FOSSIL and concepts like BISOU, will achieve unprecedented sensitivity to the sky-averaged millimetre and sub-millimetre radiation, opening new opportunities to detect astrophysical foregrounds alongside primordial spectral distortions. Among these, the cumulative emission from extragalactic carbon monoxide (CO) rotational transitions constitutes a relevant component of the cosmic monopole signal and requires accurate modelling to assess its impact on future observations. In this talk, I will present a revised modelling framework for the extragalactic CO monopole. I will discuss the main modelling assumptions and compare the predictions obtained with different approaches. Finally, I will show the expected CO monopole signal in the context of upcoming spectral distortion experiments.
