Travel Information: from Copenhagen to Hillerød Station

Hillerød is situated approximately 35 km North of the centre of Copenhagen. Getting from Copenhagen Airport to Hillerød is quite easy. Going by bus takes 1 1/2 hour and by metro and S-train 15+50 minutes.

Information on all public transport in Denmark, including buses, metros, S-trains and trains, can be found on DOT - dinoffentligetransport.dk. While planning for you trip you can also use the travel planner rejseplanen.dk. See below for ticket information.

To go from the Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) to Nørreport Station in central Copenhagen, where you can transfer to the S- trains, take the M2 metro which leaves at the end of terminal 3.

The most convenient way to get from central Copenhgen to Hillerød is with the S-train, see DOT for information. Take the S-train line E, which has Hillerød as end station. Line E passes Copenhagen Central (København H) and Nørreport stations and leaves every 10 minutes.

The bus company is called Movia. See their web site www.moviatrafik.dk for time schedules. You might have to change buses a few times, when going from the airport directly to the hostel in Hillerød. The cost going by bus and by metro and S-train is the same.

The Danish train company is DSB - www.dsb.dk.

Travel Information: from Hillerød Station to Danhostel

The Danhostel hostel is few kilometers away from the Hillerød train station, on Lejrskolevej 4. If you do not feel like walking, you can use a bus (301, 302 or 375R). The bus trip takes approximately 10 minutes depending on the bus. All of these buses run roughly once an hour on Saturday afternoons.

  • The easiest is to take bus 302 from Hillerød Station in direction Egedammen. Get off at Ved Egedam/Fredskovhellet. Walk 4-5 minutes ahead on Fredskovhellet street, then turn left on Lejrskolvej which takes you to Danhostel. Equally far to walk is if you take the bus to the end station Egedammen and walk back along Fredskovhellet.

  • Bus 375R from Hillerød Station in direction Rungsted Kyst St Øst. Get off at Egedammen and walk back 4-5 min along Fredskovhellet then turn right on Lejrskolvej which takes you to Danhostel.

  • Bus 301 from Hillerød Station in direction Kongens Vaenge. Get off at Folevang/Dyrhavevej. Walk 10-15 minutes to Danhostel.

Tickets on public transport

Tickets are common to all means of public transport. See DOT for detailed information. There is a DOT Mobilbilletter app that might be helpful for buying tickets, otherwise tickets can be purchased at most train stations, in a number of kiosks and from the metro ticket machines located in all metro stations. The machines accept Danish coins and all major credit cards. You can also buy a ticket on the bus, but you need to pay cash in Danish kroner.

Sjaelland and neighbouring islands are divided into a number of zones (1-99). If you look at ticket information pages, you will find "short distance" tickets for travels up to 8 zones. Unfortunately trips going from Copenhagen Airport or Centre to Hillerød cover more than 8 zones. The remaining options are:

  • A single ticket, one person, one way, approximately DKK 100.

  • Travelcard (Rejsekort flex). See rejsekort.dk for more information.

You need to remember to check in at the beginning of a trip, and check out when you get to your final destination. The card is personal but can be used by anyone. It costs DKK 50 to get, and the first minimum charge is DKK 100. Using a travelcard is up to 40% cheaper than single tickets.

You can buy travelcards online in advance, or at København H station (among other places). To refill your travelcard, use any of the ticket vending machines on train or metro stations.

  •

Within Hillerød you can buy single tickets for local travel on the bus (cash only).
