Abstract: We study classical background electric fields and the Schwinger effect in de- Sitter space which has applications in magnetogenesis and inflationary dark matter production. We first derive consistency conditions for having a constant electric field in de-Sitter space, then we recompute the induced Schwinger current in de-Sitter for both fermions and scalars. This requires a consistent renormalization
procedure to remove divergences which we discuss in detail. Along the
way we clarify previous calculations in the literature of the induced
current which give differing results from ours and which may have
physical implications for both magnetogenesis and inflationary dark matter production.
