Description
Hydrodynamics is a rather old subject, but in the last few
years we have seen enormous progress in understanding
some of the theoretical underpinnings of the subject. I will
explain how the standard axioms of the phenomenological
theory can be explicitly solved for allowed forms of transport.
The solution reveals some interesting hidden symmetries
which we will explain from a microscopic perspective. We
shall see that the effective field theory of non-linear
dissipative fluids is described in terms of a novel topological
sigma model.
